We are in the midst of a personal essay unit, and I am enjoying it so much. I love this unit because I get to really know what the kids are passionate about. They have such wonderful things they care about and this writing unit gives them a time to really examine why and how.
Right now we are generating ideas in our notebooks and soon we will be narrowing these ideas in order to develop a thesis statement. Thesis statements in 5th grade! They are so ready and so capable.
We are also working through identifying text structures in order to help students understand non-fiction texts.
